Divorce mediation is a process in which participants, together with the assistance of a neutral person, target disputed issues, develop options, consider alternatives, and reach a consensual settlement that will accommodate their needs. You don’t have to get along well; you only need to be willing to try mediation. At Derr & Villarreal, we believe in taking a thoughtful approach, putting the power in your hands. This mediated approach towards an uncontested divorce allows a couple to maximize their financial settlement saving both time and money.

A Healthy Economical Alternative to Divorce Litigation
The Divorce Mediators
Lisa Derr has practiced family law for 30 years. She began her practice as an attorney in 1987 and the mediation practice in 1995 after seeing that litigation was not the best avenue for solving clients’ divorce issues. In the mediation process, Lisa approaches your situation with empathy and objectivity. She helps you clearly understand your options so that you can make informed decisions.
Cassel Villarreal received her Juris Doctor degree from DePaul College of Law in Chicago with honors, in 2001. She knows that the mediation process will help you understand the options available to you and ease the strain that divorce can take on your financial and emotional well-being. Cassel will work diligently in understanding your unique situation to reach a lasting agreement through mediation.
The Mediation Process
The mediator discusses with the parties the issues that need to be addressed to reach a divorce settlement. With the mediator present, each person explains what is most important to each of you. The mediator looks for common goals while concentrating on communication to help you work out your differences in a way that satisfies both. The mediator clarifies the basic information and requirements for an uncontested divorce hearing. The mediation agreement is drafted by the parties and the mediator during the session. That agreement covers all issues such as child custody and placement schedules, the amount of child support, whether spousal maintenance will be paid by one party to the other, for how long, and at what amount, dividing all property, as well as responsibility for debts and tax issues.

Mediation has a number of benefits over divorce litigation including:
- Saving money
- Better compliance with the final agreement

- Privacy of finances
- A healthier environment for children
